Apple Yellow Cherry Tomato Insta-Garden

Apple Yellow Cherry Tomato Insta-Garden

If you've been burned by bland yellow tomatoes before, forget everything you know. Lemon-bright skin, snappy acid, and a sweetness that tastes like a real tomato should. An All-America Selections Winner on flavor alone.

Indeterminate F1 Hybrid · AAS Winner · Seeded February 17 · Flowering now, first ripe fruit in 3–5 weeks · Full sun

📦 What's Included

This isn't a tomato start. It's an Alchemy Garden — seeded in February, fed on the farm, flowering and fruiting now, delivered ready to harvest from. You skip the hardest eight weeks of tomato growing and go straight to the table.

Every Insta-Garden comes with:

  • Established 2-ft tomato plant in a 3-gallon soft pot, seeded February 17 and grown out on-farm
  • 2.5 ft support stake installed (indeterminate varieties will outgrow this — plan to upsize by July)
  • 0.5 lb of Alchemy Gardens weekly feed — the same Mittleider-based formula I use on all 246 tomato plants across my farm, tomato/pepper optimized
  • Pre-measured weekly scoop — no guessing, no math
  • One-page growing and feeding instructions — written for Tulsa conditions

You water. You feed once a week. You harvest.

📖 The story

Apple Yellow is an All-America Selections Winner developed by Johnny's Selected Seeds, the Maine-based grower-focused seed company. Johnny's was started by Rob Johnston as a 22-year-old growing vegetables for market in New Hampshire, with the goal of identifying and selling the best-tasting, easiest-to-grow varieties to American gardeners. All-America Selections is an independent, non-profit organization that trials new, never-before-sold crop varieties and selects only the best garden performers. AAS isn't a marketing badge — it's a trial result. Apple Yellow earned it on flavor.

🍴 What you're getting

20–25 gram fruits with great, balanced flavor — a rare find in a yellow tomato — in an attractive dimpled-bell shape. Bright lemon-yellow. Heavy producer. The acidity is the point — it's what keeps them from being the one-note sweetness that plagues most yellow cherries.

📅 What to expect

Continuous producer through the season. Good set even during hotter stretches.

💧 Care in Tulsa

Water 2x per week, deeply. Mulch. One scoop of feed per week. Prune suckers for airflow and larger fruit. Pick at full lemon-yellow color.

Note: Apple Yellow is an F1 hybrid. Saved seeds will not grow true — plan to buy fresh seed or a new plant each year if you want the same variety.

☀️ Heat mitigation

Decent heat tolerance. Standard Oklahoma playbook: morning water, heavy mulch, shade cloth during peak afternoon heat.

🛡️ Common problems

Good vigor, typical of Johnny's hybrids. Weekly inspection catches problems early. Neem oil for aphids, hand-pick hornworms.

✔ Best for

Mixed cherry plates alongside red and purple varieties · Bright salads · The tomato that proves yellow ≠ bland
