๐ŸŒฑ Origin & Story

Brad's Atomic Grape was created by Brad Gates of Wild Boar Farms, located near Napa Valley, California. Gates is one of the most prolific independent tomato breeders in the country, known for developing visually striking varieties through open-pollination and careful selection โ€” no genetic engineering, no corporate labs. Just a breeder with a good eye and a lot of patience.

He released Brad's Atomic Grape in the mid-2010s, and it hit the tomato world like a freight train. In 2017, it won Best in Show at the National Heirloom Expo in Santa Rosa, California โ€” one of the largest heirloom produce events in the world. The judges, surrounded by hundreds of stunning varieties, chose this one.

Baker Creek Rare Seeds picked it up and it quickly became one of their most popular varieties. As a modern open-pollinated creation, it's not a true heirloom โ€” it's too new. But because it's open-pollinated and stable, you can save seed and grow it true to type. That accessibility is part of what made it explode in popularity. Gardeners can share it freely, and they do.

๐Ÿด Flavor & Fruit

Elongated grape-shaped fruits, 1โ€“2 oz each, produced in generous clusters. The color is the first thing you notice โ€” a shifting palette of lavender, violet, olive green, brown, and gold, often all on the same fruit. The intensity of color depends on sun exposure; fruits that get more direct light develop deeper purple-blue anthocyanin pigments on the shoulders.

But Brad's Atomic Grape isn't just a pretty face. The flavor is genuinely complex โ€” sweet and fruity up front, with a tangy, almost tropical finish. There's a depth here that many cherry and grape varieties simply don't have. The flesh is firmer than most grape types, with a satisfying snap when you bite in.

This is the rare variety that wins on both looks and taste. Most striking tomatoes sacrifice flavor for appearance. This one didn't.

We grow Brad's Atomic Grape because nothing else we've found stops people in their tracks the way this one does. At market, it's the variety that makes someone pick up a fruit, stare at it, and say "wait โ€” that's a tomato?" Then they taste it and the conversation changes entirely. It's our best ambassador for the idea that homegrown tomatoes are a different species from what you find at the store.

๐Ÿ“… Your Oklahoma Season

Plant after mid-April, or May 1 for extra caution. Tulsa's average last frost is early April. Expect first flowers in late May to early June, with first ripe fruit in mid-July. Production is continuous once it starts, running through summer and into fall until first frost in early November.

Blossom drop begins when daytime temperatures reach 85โ€“90ยฐF and nighttime stays above 72ยฐF, becoming severe above 100ยฐF. The small fruit size helps with faster recovery after heat breaks. The most stunning color development often happens in late summer and fall when day-night temperature swings are wider.

Ripeness can be tricky to judge with this variety โ€” the multi-colored skin makes the usual "color change" cues unreliable. Go by feel: a slight softness when gently squeezed means it's ready. When in doubt, give it another day.

๐Ÿ’ง Care for Optimal Health

Water deeply twice a week at the base, never overhead. Mulch 2โ€“3 inches to keep moisture consistent and soil temperatures stable. Consistent watering is important โ€” these fruits have firm flesh, but erratic moisture still causes splitting, especially after rain.

Feed steadily throughout the season. Heavy producers need consistent nutrition.
DIY mix: 2 tbsp fish emulsion + ยฝ tsp kelp per gallon, every 2โ€“3 weeks.

Calcium at planting โ€” crushed eggshells or gypsum โ€” is good insurance, though blossom end rot is uncommon on fruit this small.

โ˜€๏ธ Oklahoma Heat

Brad's Atomic Grape handles Tulsa heat reasonably well. The small fruit size reduces sunscald risk, and the vigorous vines produce good leaf cover. Interestingly, strong sun exposure actually benefits this variety โ€” the anthocyanin pigments that create the purple-blue coloring develop most intensely with direct sunlight. A little afternoon stress can produce the most striking fruit.

That said, during the worst heat weeks (100ยฐF+), deep morning watering and optional afternoon shade cloth (30โ€“40%) help maintain production. Don't sacrifice the plant's health for color.

No formal disease resistance ratings โ€” this is an open-pollinated variety. Good cultural practices are your primary defense.

Stay ahead of these:
โ€ข Early blight โ€” lower leaves in late summer. Remove affected foliage at the stem, don't compost. Copper fungicide preventively every 7โ€“10 days after wet stretches โ€” follow your product label for exact rates.
โ€ข Hornworms โ€” the vigorous foliage hides them well. Check leaf undersides weekly. Hand-pick or apply Bt (1 tsp/gallon, evening spray).
โ€ข Aphids โ€” 2 tbsp neem oil + 2 tsp dish soap per gallon.
โ€ข Splitting โ€” pick promptly when ripe. Overripe fruit on the vine will crack, especially after rain.
โ€ข Ripeness misjudgment โ€” don't wait for uniform color. These won't turn a single shade of red. Learn to judge by touch.

Fresh: Halved lengthwise in a bowl. The cross-section reveals green and red interior marbling that's almost as striking as the skin. Serve these anywhere you want people to stop and look before they eat.

On a Board: Cheese boards, charcuterie, appetizer platters โ€” Brad's Atomic Grape is the centerpiece. The color range makes every arrangement look intentional.

Roasted: Halve and roast at 400ยฐF until blistered. The sweetness intensifies and the colors deepen. Toss with pasta or spread on crusty bread.

Preserved: Dehydrate them for visually striking dried tomatoes that taste as complex as they look.
