Apple Yellow was bred by Gana Seed Co. Ltd. and earned the 2020 All-America Selections award in the Edible-Vegetable category โ meaning it was trialed by independent judges across North America and outperformed the competition in real garden conditions. AAS winners aren't marketing fluff. They're tested blind, grown in the ground, and scored on flavor, yield, disease tolerance, and garden performance.
What makes Apple Yellow unusual is the combination of volume and quality. Under ideal conditions, a single plant can produce up to 1,000 fruits in a season. That number sounds absurd until you see it in person โ the clusters are dense, the plant doesn't quit, and the fruit just keeps coming.
The shape is distinctive: small, round, with a dimpled bottom that genuinely resembles a miniature apple. The golden-yellow skin is attractive enough to make this a conversation piece at any farmers' market or dinner table.

Small fruits, roughly 1โ2 oz each, golden yellow with that signature apple-shaped dimple at the blossom end. The flavor is sweet and bright โ Brix readings around 8 put it in genuinely sweet territory for a tomato. There's a mild, fruity quality that kids and tomato-skeptics tend to love.
The skin is tender, the flesh is juicy, and the low acidity makes it easy to eat by the handful without that sharp bite some cherry types have. In a mixed bowl with red and dark varieties, Apple Yellow brings color and sweetness that ties everything together.

We added Apple Yellow because we wanted something the kids would eat straight off the plant โ and something that would look stunning in our mixed cherry bowls at market. It delivered on both counts. Your Oklahoma Season
Plant after mid-April, or May 1 for extra caution. Tulsa's average last frost is early April. Expect first flowers within a few weeks of transplant, with first ripe fruit in early to mid-July. Once it starts, it does not stop โ continuous harvest through the summer and into fall until first frost, which averages early November in Tulsa.
Blossom drop begins when daytime temperatures reach 85โ90ยฐF and nighttime stays above 72ยฐF, becoming severe above 100ยฐF. Apple Yellow's hybrid vigor helps it push through heat better than most โ expect shorter gaps between fruit sets compared to open-pollinated varieties.
๐ง Care for Optimal Health
Water deeply twice a week at the base, never overhead. Mulch 2โ3 inches to keep moisture steady and soil temperatures stable. With this much fruit production, consistent watering is critical โ the plant is working hard all season.
Feed regularly. A plant producing this volume of fruit is a hungry plant.
DIY mix: 2 tbsp fish emulsion + ยฝ tsp kelp per gallon, every 2โ3 weeks.
Don't skip the calcium at planting โ crushed eggshells or gypsum in the hole. With hundreds of fruits developing simultaneously, blossom end rot prevention matters.

Apple Yellow's hybrid genetics give it better heat tolerance than many heirloom cherries. The small fruit size also helps โ less mass to sunscald, faster recovery after heat-induced blossom drop. Still, deep morning watering and 30โ40% afternoon shade cloth during the worst weeks will keep production higher and more consistent.
The plant's vigorous foliage provides good self-shading. Resist the urge to over-prune โ that leaf canopy is protecting hundreds of developing fruits.

As a modern hybrid, Apple Yellow has better baseline disease tolerance than most heirlooms, though specific resistance ratings aren't listed for this variety.
Stay ahead of these:
โข Early blight โ lower leaves in late summer. Remove affected foliage at the stem, don't compost. Copper fungicide preventively every 7โ10 days after wet stretches โ follow your product label for exact rates.
โข Hornworms โ with this much foliage, they can hide. Check leaf undersides weekly. Hand-pick or apply Bt (1 tsp/gallon, evening spray).
โข Aphids โ 2 tbsp neem oil + 2 tsp dish soap per gallon. Check growing tips and flower clusters especially.
โข Cracking โ less common on small fruit, but erratic watering after dry spells will do it. Stay consistent.
